I now possess a gleaming new Acer AS5738PG laptop. Good thing, too, because the trouble with my 7-year-old Dell desktop has been recurring unpredictably, to my vexation; it is probably a confluence of unrelated problems that have materialized all at once, and I am not inclined to try to figure out what they are.

The new computer sits in its box waiting, brimming with potential. I will call it Flappy.

01:49 pm - Thoughts on Aughts

There's an old man who comes to the gym in the mornings. He has a walker with an oxygen bottle, and bears visible scars from open heart surgery and a pacemaker implant. Monday morning I loosened up in the hot tub, and the two of us talked.

I learned that he had his first surgery in early December of 1999. I was reminded of my bout with myocarditis that same month, and how, as I lay in the Intensive Care Unit at UVRMC, the rooms around me were full of what I have come to call "gray people." Their skin was literally deathly pale, and I assumed that the majority of them were going to die there.

I asked where this man had gone for treatment back in '99, and he told me he was at UVRMC, and spent most of December in the Intensive Care Unit.

One of those gray people not only survived, but did so for a full decade at current count.

The last decade has been huge for me. I started a new job, rose to prominence, and then quit to do the same thing again. I created Schlock Mercenary, and Sandra and I had two more kids.

All of this in a decade.

I don't know what my elderly friend at the gym has done with the ten years the doctors, God, and/or the Fates gave back to him, but I'm sure they are precious.

Whine about the "aughts" if you must, but as we begin the second decade of the twenty-first century, know that at least two of us are really thankful for the last ten years.

It was a trojan. Comcast helpfully let me know that I (or something) was sending evil e-mails out of port 25 and that they had blocked my modem from doing that anymore (My e-mail program was already set to send through port 587 like it's supposed to). I got AVG's command-line scanner to clean it up, where the regular interfacey one had failed:
...\Local Settings\Temp\jar_cache5112.tmp Trojan horse Downloader.Generic_c.AVI
I have no clue how I got it.

I would give my own Greek horse a sharp look about all this, but she's suffered the most.

While not quite as urgent now, plans to buy myself a new compy are still on. This thing is a rattletrap and the main drive is about full.

The heat got fixed yesterday, and I was getting ready to make a post about how I was feeling the truest spirit of the solstice. Then my computer went BSOD. It continued to do so after every reboot. I still haven't figured out what's doing it; I can only run in safe mode. Safe mode lets me do a fair amount, but it doesn't let me change the screen resolution from 640x480. I am of a mind to just continue to read books in bed.

Hmm. Or maybe it was an accountant who snapped? Things have been difficult for them lately...
